[Mod] Galaxy Skybox [1.0.0] [galaxybox]

by Wuzzy » Post

Hi! This simple mod adds a simple skybox showing a dark and blueish galaxy. It also sets the light level for all players to a rather low level, regardless of the actual time, so make sure you bring plenty of lamps with you. ;-)
Sun, Moon and clouds will be removed as well.

Perfect for a dark and lonely atmosphere, for space games where the normal sun/moon cycle does not really make sense or just for general emptyness.

Warning: This mod is pretty large, the textures amount to about 1980 KiB, so think twice before using it on a server.
Spoiler
The actual light level differs from the light level the players see.

Keep this in mind if you run servers or create subgames. If the actual light level is somehow relevant for gameplay, you should also set time_speed to 0 to disable the day/night cycle and set the time of day to about 2000.

The mod intentionally does not write any settings, because I think it is rude if a mod writes into a configuration which applies globally.

If you have a better solution for this dilemma, please tell me!

IMO the real solution would be if Minetest would allow per-world settings, but I fear this will not happen anytime soon.

Coooool
Want to add a nice saturn?

I really do wish that someone might work on my wishlist for configurable multiple "sky objects"/satellites. ;-)
Spoiler
Possible future configuration could include (my wishlist ;-P)
  • Size of object in the sky
  • Keeping the descriptive original file name
  • setting of a rising time
  • More than one object (satellites and natural satellites)
  • setting offset from default path for each satelite (parallel paths)
  • making the orbit time of each satellite independant from the star background (making eclipses possible)
  • making individual orbit paths independant from the default star background direction (east to west)

I actually just wanted a pure galaxy skybox.

Minetest doesn't show sun and moon when a texturized skybox is used. The clouds are also automatically disabled. So the only way would be to paste the image into the skybox itself, making Saturn static (like everything else).

But you could still do this for yourself by editing one of the texture files and pasting the image into it. For personal use.
I tried it by myself, but it didn't look too good for me.

As for your wishlist: Yeah, this would be great if someone added that.
