I once had a monitor where the pin was bent and produced constant red until I un-bent it with pliers.

Yeah, but, I cut the cable right at the connector to splice in another one, so I can't just re-solder it together. the original one was built-in, the other was a normal cable I had laying around. I should have left a bit there to put it back together...

Re: Tedypig's General Discussion about being new to Linux
OK, same thing. This sucks. I got a "new" CRT monitor from a friend. With the extra 0.3 Ghz (2.70 - 3.00) Minetest downloaded and installed 100 times faster... shocking really... and I'm getting 30+ FPS... BUT! Black sky, no inventory textures, etc... It does it on servers also. No clue what could be happining..

What's this going to prove? That I have a old crappy computer? Lol!

Did you search on internet with these keywords:
intel corporation 82865g integrated graphics controller driver
Maybe you can find help in the results.

Re: Tedypig's General Discussion about being new to Linux
According to some websites your graphics card only supports OpenGL 1.3, this could be too low for Minetest to work completly. You could try running sudo apt-get install jockey-gtk && jockey-gtk, this will open a program which searches for drivers..Tedypig wrote:I'm getting 30+ FPS... BUT! Re: Tedypig's General Discussion about being new to Linux
It said it's up to date. I have an old graphics card somewhere, but it may be slower. If I find it, I will try it. I'm not getting my hopes up though.
EDIT: It didn't work.

You can build a decent machine (for playing MT) with only $125 - $150.Tedypig wrote:Anyone want to mail me $404.99? Lol. I need a new machine....

Re: Tedypig's General Discussion about being new to Linux
I know, but I wanted to make a decent server also. I found a "barebones" 3.9Ghz 6 core, 8Gb ddr3, etc., etc. for $436.14 (includes tax, assembly, and standard shipping). Plus it has an awesome case. :-) I know I don't want Windows anymore, so I don't need to pay the extra $100.00+ for that to be installed. I have a few decent hard drives laying around (80+Gb*3), so I don't need those. Once I get a job (or buy a decent winning scratch-off...) I'm getting this beast. Lol.sfan5 wrote:You can build a decent machine (for playing MT) with only $125 - $150.Tedypig wrote:Anyone want to mail me $404.99? Lol. I need a new machine....

lol. What you looked at is a high-end PC, this is way more than enough for MT (and even MC).Tedypig wrote:I know, but I wanted to make a decent server also. A decent Minetest server would cost at most $200.

Re: Tedypig's General Discussion about being new to Linux
This is the most minimal machine I can find, and dual core sucks (but still better than my single core P4). This setup costs $241.23 with tax and shipping, etc. I only added the stuff I don't have that's compatible (I.E. Ram), which I put the minimum they had.sfan5 wrote: lol. Re: Tedypig's General Discussion about being new to Linux
I'm playing Minetest on a Celeron G1610. The newer version of that Celeron is said to be even faster regarding graphics. There are cheap boards available with everything onboard. Of course it's not as fast and does not allow as far a view as a machine with an extra graphics card would allow - but it's usually more than sufficient.

Re: Tedypig's General Discussion about being new to Linux
I know, but I don't want ANY lag. If I planed to run a server I would need at least a quad core to not have lag. I have a list of mods I want to run also, some of which NEED performance (I.E. Mesecons and Technic). I know I don't need some 8 core, 32Gb GDDR3, 4TB HDD monster, though it would be nice. I just want to play, and possibly run a server, both with no (or minimal) lag.Sokomine wrote:I'm playing Minetest on a Celeron G1610. Both Mesecons and Technic do not require a very good CPU, mods can't even make use of more CPU cores.Tedypig wrote:I have a list of mods I want to run also, some of which NEED performance (I.E. Mesecons and Technic).
A custom-built PC for $200 is more than sufficent for that, but if you want to throw money out of the window I can't stop you...Tedypig wrote:I know I don't need some 8 core, 32Gb GDDR3, 4TB HDD monster, though it would be nice. I just want to play

Re: Tedypig's General Discussion about being new to Linux
@Tedypig Like sfan said, don't waste your money. Just use something like pcpartpicker to help choose parts for a ~$200 pc. minetestserver does not need a beefy computer to work. iirc, someone actually made a server on a raspberry pi.

I also want to be able too play guys... To run the server AND play on the same machine, I NEED performance. I have a dual core @3.2 Ghz 3.2Ghz with 2Gb of GDDR2, and I had a server on it and played at the same time, I got ~10 FPS with JUST ME on it. My GF got on and it dropped to ~8, and a random person got on and it crashed. This is why I say I need at-least a quad core.
EDIT: Typo.

You are aware that the FPS you get depends on your graphics card more than on your CPU?Tedypig wrote:I also want to be able too play guys... Anyway, you can get a computer with a quad-core CPU for $200 too.
