VoxelCraft? I suggest this only in the hope that it will inspire others to think of something better.

This name suggestion is too high-quality. It belongs in the thread for the highest quality name suggestions..

LibreVoxels
ChatGPT churns out dozens of names like these automatically. LibreVoxels isn't as bad as most though.

I don't like these names, PaliPoki just makes no sense, and KreiBloko sounds like a lego knock-off, I think a far better name would be "Freeminer".

Freeminer is already taken as the name of a Minetest fork. It's a complicated history as well, with a quite old version based on 0.4.x series of Minetest engine, and more recent work from Proller, which I'm not even sure is related to the old fork's code. The main engine can't really assume the name Freeminer because that would create confusion and look aggressive, moving the name of the main engine over onto a fork. What would happen to the fork? They aren't really going to merge, and the fork had the name first, so it deserves to keep its own name.

Well, I had forgotten about this debate so I'm giving an opinion to complete it
Open Orizon (reflects a game engine name and not as a game , suits us)
Open to the imagination, to the construction But also open in the sense of free software.
Open Orizon means that there is no limit.
Also, there is no connection with mc or cubes because Mintetest is a game engine.

The best name instead of Minetest is... oh much better

'cannibalism'

as most server just use the server-list and minetest Forum for advancement or get new player.
= WE don't get new player from outside our existing community.

Ok, as of serverlist is base for many other fork clients maybe there also by luck at bit.
And if they are not original minetest, maybe even don't see them even on other lists as not shown.

Maybe Voxode - voxel and node (name for engine) and maybe main Minecraft like game: Mineclonia -> VoxMine 1, Mineclone 2 -> VoxMine 2, Mineclone 5 -> VoxMine 5
my english may be bad ;)

I agree with PaliPoki and KreiBloko just feeling weird. Of course this is coming from me being used to "Minetest" for a year and I can get used to changes... Though neither of them do seem to fit.

I like this though, "Open Horizons", more-so "Open Orizon" because it feels more unique (despite it being a typo I think?).

Agreed with Blockhead, "LibreVoxels" isn't too bad of a name either.

I'd say "Open Orizon", "Voxode", and "LibreVoxels" should be at the top in my personal opinion.

Ideally any name we consider should be further away from what is expected to do with the engine and what inspired it - and more so what the engine provides as base essentials. So going for "nodes", "voxels" instead of say "craft" or "mine" - but it shouldn't also seem too far from the purpose like "PaliPoki" and "KreiBloko" do - unless they're words borrowed from different languages or something? I haven't familiarized myself with why those names exist or were chosen.

Could consider "Lua" in the name like FreeLikeGnu and Kostivar mention. Maybe "LuaVox", "LuaVoxel", "LuaBox"? I don't know, that's just something I randomly considered.
Your fellow anthro-therian (copper) husky furry :D (hopefully not too cringe lol). How do ye' do?

Mine coz the game is mine to do what i want with .
Test coz it tests our survival skills and ingenuity and imagination in a sandbox environment .
Minetest appears to have dropped off the radar as it longer appears in the list of MC alternatives .

I have seen many suggestions before but this caught me off-guard. It's a nice word play in Latin that is also a technical description that fits Minetest' concept of "game with cubes". I very much like this suggestion :)

Please do not pick a ridiculous name or one that is hard to pronounce or one that leads to an unhappy abbreviation.

Please prefer simplicity and memorability over tongue twisters and wedging in FOSS or dev terms.

I like that. Helps re-inforce the game engine aspect.

Apologies if any of the following names were suggested.

In our house, my boy plays Minecraft and I play Minetest. I always ask him if he wants to play "Minebest" with me =)

Could always go with tried and true (lol): SuperTuxCraft or TuxCraft

A youtuber suggesting to viewers to try VoxEngine sounds like its more of a development software than an actual game. It all depends on how and what the project wants to sell itself as. A catchy quick game like name vs a name that represents a much larger scope 3d voxel game engine. Some name ideas as far as a voxel game:
OpenCraft
OpenVoxel
VoxelCraft
OpenCube
OpenVox

Minetest labels itself as a voxel game engine though, it could have a name that reflects that:
VoxelEngine or Voxel Engine. Maybe expand on it? Open Voxel Engine
VoxEngine
BoxEngine
OpenEngineBox

Names are completely subjective and sound good or bad to others. The names suggested at the beginning of the thread sound really terrible to me, but others might like them. If I had to pick one I would pick:

VoxBox or VoxelBox. Even switching them, BoxVox or BoxelVox sound okay to me too.

To me it sounds quick, catchy, memorable. It doesnt feel limited to just a game name and could represent an engine as well. Just throwing out some thoughts for fun.

Thanks

In a certain way, it's sexy. Academic. Sophisticated. But others are right when they say that it's long and a bit bulky. Here, good old Esperanto as "modern latin" could help:
Kubludo (= block game), speaks out nicely (3 syllables) and sounds no worse than, e.g., "roblox".

The name should definitely not contain the terms "mine" or "craft" because games made in MT are not necessarily related to either. In games like "glitch" or "backrooms" or "citadel" you neither craft anything nor mine anything. But it's all blocks. I want to think beyond those MC-like or MTG-like games. "Voxel" is too general and non-devs don't know what the heck a "voxel" is.

I also like:

WorldForge: sounds like really high aims. But I'd be surprised if it's not taken yet. I have seen annoying ads about games with similar names (was it "WarForge"?)

EMTE: nice, short, recursive, non-technical, easy to speak (if you know how), international (no english pronunciation required, even the French would speak it right)

Mese (what about "Black Mese"?): even though most games probably don't contain Mese the material. The name is just nice, short, unique, has no specific meaning.

My suggestions (to stay on-topic):
BlockBase (because the whole thing is based on blocks, and in many games, people maintain bases made of blocks)
Blockbuster (nice marketing, could attract people)
