Baunilha Texture Pack

by Mirtilo » Post

I finally released my first texture pack!

Baunilha is a pack that I created as a personal project to change some textures in the minetest game that I didn't like, but I ended up investing too much in it and changed almost everything. The goal was to create a more fun and consistent aesthetic for the game, but maintain the "vanilla" feel (baunilha means vanilla in portuguese). I think the look ended up evolving into its own style, but I still think the title suits it...

I plan on updating the pack in the future and make it compatible with some mods, so it's still a WIP!

Just want to compliment it since it looks so good. And it even has (almost?) total coverage. You even styled the formspecs! (as much as MTG allows for it, anyway)
Definitively my texture pack of choice, should I play on a mostly unmodded world / server.
My only complaint, and no need to take it seriously, but the apple and acacia tree bark textures are still clearly based on the vanilla equivalent, which I have come loath over the years of seeing them on every mod tree with only a color filter applied on top.
On a high point, I love how you did the leaves. Over the years I also work on my own 'vanilla-ish, but fix stuff that annoys me' texture pack and various mod projects, and making leaf textures look even moderately good is always a struggle.

Thank you for the review, I'm glad you liked it! And yeah... you can see I enjoyed doing some textures more than others lol. But create more unique textures is something I want to do in future updates.

Delicious.

Although I don't really like the style, and won't play with this texture pack on, some textures are really great, and I can see why people would fall in love with this style. This is much better than MTG's weird placeholders. Good job!

Voxelgarden had (and still kind of has) a big problem with placeholders. Blueberries and blueberry bushes were amongst them. I've been searching for a long time trying to find replacements, and none of the ones I found looked good enough to be included. But your work changed it.

As a result, I've incorporated some textures into Voxelgarden with attribution: https://codeberg.org/voxelgarden/voxelgarden/pulls/103

Thank you very much, and I hope you'll continue on making good stuff. You might just be the new Gambit (check out their work if you haven't already)! ;D

It's so cool you used some of my textures to this game. I played it and really enjoyed it! Even though I've never played it before, it gives me a nostalgic and cozy feeling. Great job!

Some updates on how the pack is going...

I decided to embrace my own style a little more instead of being too attached to the original look. This means I am redoing ALL the textures so they are all originals (no more edits from the default textures) but of course, I'm still trying to keep the same "vibe" of the pack. The attached image is a preview of how some textures are looking so far.

I'm on vacation so I hope to finish it soon, however I'm quite a perfectionist so idk.... When it's finally done, I'll also put it on codeberg and then I'll focus on making it compatible with some popular mods (I'm already slowly working on ethereal).

This looks... AWESOME! No, really!

Especially adore the wood/tree textures, it all just feels so good to look at.

The apple texture might need a change though... Maybe it's the form, maybe it's the shading, maybe it's the contour, but it just doesn't seem right to me.

Re: Baunilha Texture Pack
I would say that it's the fruit that is too small compared to the peduncle that is too big.. so it seems that it is a smaller fruit than a apple, like a cherry maybe.

But yes, that texture pack seems fantastic, that is truly pixel art !

This looks very promising. The textures have a very clean and unified look.

Changed it a little bit. I think it looks more round now and the shading is simpler. Also made the peduncle a bit smaller. I made it big before so it wouldn't look like it's floating under the tree but I guess it doesn't need to be that big.

This looks much better! Really like the shading now. The changes to the leaf and peduncle are so subtle, yet I just adore that. And the contour is much less crude now.

Thank you! Can't wait for the full update :D

Baunilha v1.0 is here!

Image

Whats new:
- added new original textures, so now ALL textures are completely made by me;
- improved most textures to make them more polished;
- added textures for fire, coral, carts, rails, vessels and more;
- Changed the stamina bar to be the default bread;
- Changed the hotbar selection square from golden to silver to make it more easy to the eyes;

My intention was to focus on MTG but I might make it have at least partial support to Mineclonia and VoxeLibre one day.

I really like your texture pack. I just took a quick look, but I can already feel that I want to thank you for the great work. I can see you’ve kept a nice balance between the original and artistic improvements, with a bit of creative freedom. I’m glad that there are so many creative ideas in this community about texture styles, but what my heart has always been missing is just vanilla with good pixel art, because I love the original game’s identity. It’s nice to see that you do too. I tried to make my own texture pack with these ideas, so I can imagine how much effort and attention it took. I'm still exploring your pack, so I won’t give any feedback yet. I would really love for a texture pack like yours to become the default one someday.

Thank you, Mirtilo :)

A suggestion / request: add an non-empty "heart_gone.png" texture.
Most times I am looking at my hearts, it's because I am trying to gauge whether I should use my food item, or if I should wait till I get more damage, to not 'waste' any of it's value.
For this purpose it's much better to see the missing hearts, rather then having to count the remaining hearts or trying to guesstimate it on gut feeling.

Example of what I did in my own texture pack:
Screenshot from 2024-11-21 19-52-49.png
Screenshot from 2024-11-21 19-52-49.png (9.35 KiB) Viewed 2736 times
Though of course there are other ways to represent the missing hearts.

The main point being that there is something to distinguish between the natural end of the healthbar (max life reached) and an unnatural end (damage received).

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't know that was possible! I just released an update with the "gone" hearts and bubbles plus a few other tweaks

Wow, so good. It feels like vanilla Minetest, but so much better and consistent style. This should be the default texture pack for MTG in my opinion. Thanks!
