2024 Luanti GAME JAM (November 1st-21st) [RESULTS ARE IN] [NEW PRIZES] jam.luanti.org

by GreenXenith » Post

Image

ANOTHER ROUND! LUANTI GAME JAM 2024!

Please check out jam.luanti.org for information about this years jam!
This will be the central location for schedule, rules, and submission rating!

What are we doing?

Between November 1st and 21st, make a Luanti game from scratch and submit it to the Luanti ContentDB using the Jam / Game 2024 tag. You can participate on your own, with a team, or both!

After the deadline, the community will score each package on jam.minetest.net by sorting a list of all packages. 3 (or more!) winners will emerge to choose from a selection of prizes (server hosting! shirts!) and a spotlight on the Luanti ContentDB!

Check out submissions from the previous jams as examples: 2021 2022 2023

If you have any questions which aren't answered by this post or the website, please ask here!

Information

The Luanti GAME JAM is managed by GreenXenith with the assistance of some Luanti Discord staff and Luanti community members (Warr1024, rubenwardy, MisterE, ExeVirus, and others).

The website may be redesigned before the jam starts.

I wanted to announce closer to the beginning of the month, but life gets in the way. The rename also added some chaos. I will do better next year! (We are probably going to stick to November from now on)

Disclaimer:
Some prizes are managed or shipped by third parties. By participating you accept that these prizes may require additional information or action on your part, should you choose to accept them.

Please review the planning document for even more details. Jam information, documents, and media are located in the data repository.

Nice cover art again!

But wasn't the jam supposed to happen every 13 (or was it 11?) months, so each month gets a jam eventually? (I.e. next one would be january.) It looks like it was oscillating between december and november. And now it's always november? What was the reason to drop the 13 month idea?

I see the theme this time is "no theme". >:)
he/him; Codeberg; GitHub; ContentDB; public personal TODO list; "DS" is preferred (but often too short)

When the rules say, "All gameplay must be original and created during the development timeframe" I am assuming this means all the code and logic and not the idea, (for example re-implementing a game that exists on a different egine woukd be fine?)

Is it okay if i already start planning out what i want to make and how to implement it (but without writing any code)?

Thank you! 13/11-month rotation was considered, but based on the 2022 jam survey it didn't seem like there was a strong consensus on what people liked. December for 2023 was a sort of cop out, since it counted for both the alternating and 13-month schedules. However, continuing the 13-month would have put this jam in January of 2025, which is sort of odd. On top of that, it's harder for people to schedule around an event that doesn't follow a true annual schedule. The idea behind rotating through each month was to theoretically make it possible for everyone to find time, but it doesn't really help because you will end up losing people due to other conflicts, eventually evening out anyway (or perhaps losing even more on an unlucky streak). A consistent month is just easier for everyone. And we chose November as opposed to December so we don't take people's time for year-end holidays.

Correct! And specifically the game logic; You are free (and encouraged) to use existing (freely-licensed) libraries and assets as components in your game, as long as you clearly did the work to make an original experience.

Certainly. I think that's how most people go about things in any game jam.

Exciting times. I love this year's banner image. It's so...I think 'whimsical' is the only word I can think of that fits.

Congratulations to Sumianvoice for "Extra Ordinance"! A well-deserved victory. Even if I had my criticism of the game due to light issues that made it difficult to see your enemies (even if they stand right next to you), the obvious main appeal of this game is that it *really* puts the engine to its limits while also offering solid gameplay (if we overlook the lighting problem) and graphics, so it's not just a tech demo either.
It seems you took a huge risk with this game since you said in the readme it's a "miracle" you finished in time. It could have turned out the concept wouldn't have worked at all. But it did. Nice! :D
The "Most Innovative" award was also really obvious for this game jam. Thank you for this game. :-)

I would love if Luanti would offer more and improved control over the camera in future release so that games like this run more smoothly.
