A self-hosted Git would be a terrible option given the track record of self-hosted software (e.g. forums, wiki) we have seen. We simply don't really have experienced web admins who could and would want to do this. And even if we had them, this would feel like a waste of their time and money when there are perfectly fine options like Codeberg. Not to mention that we would miss out on discoverability on these platforms.this would be the best option after a self-hosted Git (e.g. Forgejo) for the Core and Mods.

Sending some hosting-funding money the way of Codeberg sounds like a great arrangement compared to hosting our own, +1.LMD wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2025 18:12A self-hosted Git would be a terrible option given the track record of self-hosted software (e.g. forums, wiki) we have seen. Why do people keep suggesting this? We have a self-hosted forum as an example of how much time and energy the dev team can put in to projects like this, and it's continually one step away from falling over completely due to lack of maintenance.

OMG. The GitHub shadowban is awful. And yeah, if the corpoation believes you're an evil scammer/hacker/spy/etc. it is very hard to convince them they're wrong since they view you as their enemy and basically automatically distrust everything you say. And frankly, Microsoft has ZERO reason to care about false-positives, especially when it hits non-paying users. They still make their money either way.
This is the price for being a "free" user on commercial platforms.
This doesn't really help the chances of me contributing to the new project.
By the way, regarding the Minetest → Luanti rename I did on the wiki: This was actually half-automated, not fully manual (as was claimed). I still used some tools on the wiki export to find the word quickly, this saved me some time over the website search feature (which was slow). The actual edits, however, were manual.

I can understand that they don't want to maintain an own git instance. But I can't understand why it has to be Github and can't be Codeberg because it's better than Github and you can also create an account with your Github / Gitlab one, so everyone with access to Github should also be able to use Codeberg.
Re: Luanti Documentation project
It's libre software from top to bottom and run by an open community that has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to the principles of free software. If that's not free, then neither is Luanti!
Yes, and neither is keeping a forum working, but the report button has been using the wrong url for what, six months now? Self hosting's extra work that somebody has to do, and you ought to provide a reasonable justification for why it's necessary.Maintaining a Forgejo instance isn’t actually hard, though.

Re: Luanti Documentation project
Glad to see continued discussion here. I'll be discussing moving to Codeberg more with the docs team (#luanti-docs on IRC), though we are still working on categorization, spell-checking, and some other "quick fixes" that I think will provide better user experience in the short term. That said, I don't know of anyone against Codeberg, really, the only challenge is doing the hard work of making sure every little thing works during the migration, and that's my specialty :)
