This was long overdue.
Unfortunately the heavily modified 0.4.x servers parasitizing the Luanti infrastructure and are run for profit with the ad-riddled modified 0.4 clients will just fake the reported server version to be back on the server list.

Some of them maybe. It's worth noting that the major player, Multicraft, sits around 5.4- or 5.5-compatible, not just 0.4.16-compatible

Most users use 5.X.X, so obviously if 0.4.X remains, it's only supporting an extreme minority, but we need to ensure that mods remain supported somehow, we can't just let mods become LOST MEDIA.

Nitpicking: "modern (C++)" is an empty word. What you probably have in mind is "hardened", "strengthened" or "safety-focused".
My game? It's Minefall.

Mods are by and large really easy to update even all the way from 0.4.15 to 5.17. By the way, the definition of lost media is that it's really hard to impossible to get a copy any more, which is not the case often except in cases where repositories get actively deleted by the user or were on a website that goes under. That's a bit different from incompatibility with later versions. And it's still pretty easy to download 0.4.17.
It means that they now target a later C++ standard version and use its features to replace worse practices from older C++ standards. A lot of IrrlichtMt was pretty "C with classes" kind of approach. They've also tried to improve in the aspects you mention.

I know, but it's not easy on an Android device...Blockhead wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2026 00:47Mods are by and large really easy to update even all the way from 0.4.15 to 5.17. I've worked on plenty of mods that haven't had updates in 10 years, it's easy to get them up-to-speed with current Luanti versions. If you got a mod in that doesn't work on a recent Luanti version or that has some depreciation warnings, let me know and I will happily take a look as my time permits.ArceusI wrote: ↑Sat Oct 03, 2026 13:30Most users use 5.X.X, so obviously if 0.4.X remains, it's only supporting an extreme minority, but we need to ensure that mods remain supported somehow, we can't just let mods become LOST MEDIA.

Well, ApolloX's mods are looking a bit concerning in their age, but I don't want them ruined, the way they are currently are perfect, though they need to somehow have corrected UIs when MineClonia is played with them. Honestly, it shouldn't be hard to keep them up-to-date, but don't ruin what they are currently, because that could cause serious issues.Sheriff_U3 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 06, 2026 13:33I've worked on plenty of mods that haven't had updates in 10 years, it's easy to get them up-to-speed with current Luanti versions. Though, Item Replicator doesn't have any recipes for MineClonia, which is concerning, but that can be corrected. Plus, if Chest With Everything isn't being updated, it could be brought along as well, making an official Softlock Prevention Suite mod, so that it would try to work in as many Luanti games as possible without hassle.
Also, the use of Chunk Keeper to keep them active is rather ridiculous, I wish there was a way to make them self-active even at a distance, so Chunk Keeper will become unnecessary.
Plus, Chest2 is aging too, but it's not to prevent Softlocks, but rather to make storage more compact, so you don't have tons of chests littering your base, it also lacks recipes for MineClonia. It too also is functionality perfect, though it could use a few UI tweaks for MineClonia.
(I found MineClonia's Chest2 recipe, so that's already resolved, but probably there should be a cheaper alternative, like 8 Chests around a Diamond Block, just to be a bit more fair)

I suppose it would be pretty easy for a motivated member of the 0.4.x community to run their own instance of the freedom-friendly-licensed serverlist project. Maybe they could coalesce on some other url without "parasitizing the Luanti infrastructure."

Why eight years old «Minetest» is still popular?
Have it some benevits over newer «Luanti»?

Fr, and if someone likes the old stuff just use textures from there and fix the mods (unless they don't know lua)
I don't know why people still prefer an outdated version missing key features which would make their server better

Just Test Tribute is arguably the most heavily modified 0.4 server in the list. However, it is by no means "run for profit" nor would I characterize it as parasitizing the Luanti infrastracture. I've regularly supported the Minetest communtiy and published numerous mods and other tools for server operators and game developers on GitHub.
In fact, I'm even planning to finally release the source code for my fork of the engine in 2027, which I rebranded as Luna3D earlier this year in preparation for that launch: www.luna3d.org

I explicitly had the commercially run servers in mind, not the forked, heavily modded, or legacy servers.sorcerykid wrote: ↑Mon Oct 12, 2026 21:50Just Test Tribute is arguably the most heavily modified 0.4 server in the list. Your server admin tools look great, btw!
Completely off topic, but your web server’s configuration is all messed up (noticed because you forgot to add a scheme to the URL and the forum acts weird) 😄sorcerykid wrote: ↑Mon Oct 12, 2026 21:50I rebranded as Luna3D earlier this year in preparation for that launch: www.luna3d.org

Re: We'll stop supporting 0.4.x on the public server list soon
Thank you so much for the clarification, and for the heads up about the certificate error. I forgot that the forum doesn't expand domain names into full URLs. I corrected the tlink, and went ahead and updated the DNS records and fixed the redirects as well.
Also I'm still curious which 0.4 servers are being run for profit. The only ones that clearly stand out as a commercially operated fork are Multicraft. But Multicraft servers are currently listed as 5.x (even though they also support connections from 0.4.x clients).
