Luanti will be at FOSDEM 2026!

by rubenwardy » Post

Luanti will be at FOSDEM 2026. FOSDEM is the largest free and open source software conference in Europe. The conference will be held on 31st January - 1st February in Brussels, Belgium. We'll be running a stall, showing off Luanti, giving out stickers and goodies, and talking to visitors about the project.

Attending FOSDEM allows us to promote Luanti, bring the community together, and connect with other open source projects. This will be our third year at FOSDEM. You can read about last year's FOSDEM on our blog: https://blog.luanti.org/2025/03/09/FOSDEM2025/

If you happen to be in the area, come along and say hi!

Info

Who? rubenwardy, Zughy, GreenXenith, and others
When? 31st Jan - 1st Feb
Where? ULB Solbosch Campus, Brussels, Belgium, Europe, Earth
Why? to demo Luanti, raise awareness, bring the community together, and interact with the FOSS community

We need your support

We need your support to make this happen. Attending a conference is expensive, we need to pay for promotional materials and the expenses of those behind the stall.

Teckids will be at FOSDEM with some people (some youth and some adults), and also hold two Luanti modding workshops in FOSDEM Junior.

Our young Luanti gamers and Luanti modding tutors designed some shirts a while ago, which can be seen here.

We'd like to sell these shirts at FOSDEM, but we don't have our own stand this year. Would a cooperation with the Luanti stand work? I imagine that the staff at the stand would sell each shirt for 25 €, and we'd donate 5 € of each sold shirt to the Luanti collective.

In exchange, we'd motivate one or two of our youth to help out at the Luanti stand ;).

As requested by Zughy, we aim to get the release of 5.15.0 done before FOSDEM.

For that, we need to catch regressions as soon as possible. Please help us doing that by testing 5.15.0-rc1 (commit 1550671) or a more recent build from the master branch.

As we need to pre-order the shirts, some timely feedback would be much appreciated.

Hello,

We've discussed this and think it would be nice addition to the stand. There's some practicalities to resolve, for example:

How to make it obvious who is legally selling these t-shirts and where the money is going. We need to make it obvious that Luanti is not selling these as it's not permitted by our non-profit structure. Perhaps a placard with the pertinent information would do

The Luanti stand ends up as a focal point for the community. We've had a lot of community members hanging around the stand and chatting to visitors about the project and helping out. The kids are welcome to join in on this, just please make sure you have a responsible adult to keep an eye on them as we're not able to do this

Great to hear that the idea will work!

Of course, we will take care of making it clearly recognisable that the sale is run by Teckids. We will also bring a card payment device that issues receipts with our org address.

I'd be interested in what exactly prevents Luanti's non-profit structure from selling merchandise, though. Maybe we can also use FOSDEM to exchange some insights into our organisations.

The "kids" are experienced conference visitors and stand/organisation volunteers. They can be fully trusted and don't need supervision. However, Teckids takes full responsibility for them, of course.

Nice, was going to ask how to accept payment

We're a member of Open Collective Europe, whose non-profit structure does not allow selling services or products: https://docs.opencollective.com/oceurop ... rks/basics

As a work around, we can sell things as individuals or create related companies and then donate the profits to the Luanti collective
