Sad to see the server go! But I'm glad that you've made the MT engine and server backup available. Wasn't this the MT community's oldest running MT server?

Hey LazyJ

Thanks for your hosting !

is a long time.

But so far I check yet, I see only the world inside,
(map, areas.dat, map_meta, mod_travelnet, moretrees,)
ah world.mt ok
but only two named : info, irc
not the mods folder ? itself

Maybe I give the world to my kids only, as no other files and hope, but without proper mods or basic hints
* mt-game same version 0.4.14 (got it from .net) ?
* basic build mods (nodes related)
** areas I see as of files
** travelnet
** moretrees
VERY difficult to reactivate then.

@Festus1965 and any one interested,

The mods and tweaked base game are all under "lggame".

After extracting the zip file, there will be a "home" directory (*not* the user's /home). Here's the path from that folder:

/home/minetest/minetest-0.4.14/games/lggame/mods

I was saddened to hear about the loss of Linuxgaming2. This was my ancestral home on minetest, my first real introduction to minetest multiplayer mode. I had years of enjoyment on this sever and even introduced my fiancee to minetest on this server. I will definitely miss being there.

This has inspired me to start my own server from a clean slate. Now that I can afford to host a server, I'm hoping to bring to other people the same kind of joy that you brought to so many others LazyJ. I wish you all the best in whatever it is you wind up doing. Take care. And if you can, keep mining at least once in a while on minetest.

Although I've not played Minetest for quite a while, I was sad to hear that the server had shutdown.
I spent many (thousands of?) hours happily chilling on LG2, met some good people, all good memories!
Huge thanks to LazyJ for keeping a great server going so long. You did a good thing there, LazyJ, for a long time.

Goodbye LG2! I was exploring the server again and again through the years, it was nice and comfy city build. Thank you for hosting it!

I'm very saddened to hear about the news. LinuxGaming was arguable the grandaddy of Minetest servers. LinuxGaming been a valuable part of the Minetest community, and it's legacy will never be forgotton.

Thank you for devoting so many years to hosting such a legendary server.

*sigh* all good things must come to an end.

Thank you LazyJ for hosting the server that got me really started into MT. I met many really great ppl here, and had a great time.
Nowadays I am no longer playing much at all, life took a few weird and unexpected turns here. Still I will certainly remember my time here fondly.

Take care, LazyJ and all the good folks I met here over time!

Very sad to see the server shut down. Proud to have been part of this great community and built some cool things. Thanks to everyone, but especially LazyJ.

The download link for the world backup isn't working for me. Does anyone else have a mirror or something?

Howdy! LazyJ and All!

I'm very proud to be once a member of this community! Great job for keeping up the server for such a long time.
I've tried to download the package but I get an error. What am I doing bad?

For those running into issues fetching the backups, I believe these became inaccessible once the VPS lapsed. As such, they are no longer retrievable from their original locations. I have a copy, but I am uncertain how to share such a large file as it's approximately 10 gigabytes. I know a few others have copies as well. Perhaps they have some insight on this issue?

I think it would be good to share the backup over BitTorrent with a dedicated seedbox/seeder PC. You still need a system dedicated (not necessarily to just BitTorrent, but always or nearly always available) to seed it when nobody else will, but it means others could help add bandwidth when they have it downloaded and are online with their client open. Someone could host it on HTTP, possibly on a free service, but that's prone to issues with bigger files - less so these days with increasing broadband sizes, but there is always the potential for client and/or server to drop out and the whole 10 GB has to start again..

If anyone is still interested, I've uploaded the world and engine zips to archive.org: https://archive.org/details/linuxgaming_2024_01_19

Checksums if you want to verify your download (sha256sum):

Code: Select all

cd8143682d2adb1f44b31f9235431ae9eb7dfffbd33904cbb7ba606ee0af228a lg_minetest_engine.zip

(Note that I downloaded them over the provided HTTP links, so I guess it's technically possible that someone MiTMed my internet connection during the download)
git_undo() { [ -e .git ] || return 1; local r=$(git remote get-url origin); cd ..; rm -rf "$OLDPWD"; git clone "$r" "$OLDPWD"; cd "$OLDPWD"; }
